Tractor Supply to open doors Saturday

Though they don’t sell tractors, Tractor Supply, which opens its local doors Saturday at 8 a.m. at 111 Independence Blvd., is perfectly adept at meeting tractor part needs, according to store manager Scott Dockery.

“It doesn’t matter how old or new the tractor is. We can get any part for it. That’s a huge part of our business,” he said of the nation-wide retail chain which will employ five full-time and seven part-time staff at its Morganton location. The space previously housed a Winn-Dixie grocery store.

“The type of customer we help is a do-it-yourselfer; a more rugged individual who doesn’t mind doing things themselves,” Dockery said. “We cater mainly to micro-farms; families with five or six acres who have goats and chickens.”

Tractor Supply Company stores are typically located in outlying towns in major metropolitan markets and in rural communities. The chain has been operating in North Carolina since 1994.

District Manager Jeff Johnson said he received a call to look at the site early in June 2011. “We started construction then in late October and hired a team right after Thanksgiving,” he said.

At noon on Thursday, the store will host a ribbon-cutting. At 8 a.m. on Feb. 4 it will hold its official grand opening, which will include the chance to win a wood splitter worth $1,000 as well as gift cards.

The store offers a comprehensive selection of merchandise for horses, livestock and pets; a broad selection of agricultural products; and tools and hardware. It also sells light-truck equipment, work clothing and seasonal products, including lawn and garden power equipment products.

Tractor Supply operates more than 1,000 stores in 44 states.
