A Burke County sheriff's deputy is in critical condition after being shot in the neck while authorities tried to serve commitment papers on a woman.
After a 12-hour standoff, police arrested Joyce Henson, 60, yesterday at her mobile home near Morganton.
Henson was taken to a mental hospital for evaluation.
Authorities said that Henson shot Deputy Martin Lawing, 31, shortly after the standoff began Tuesday night. He was trying to toss a phone through a window.
Lawing was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.
Authorities said that Henson refused to cooperate when deputies arrived at her house and that she threatened to shoot anyone who approached the door.
She continued shooting at officers until they shut off her electricity and fired 50 canisters of tear gas into her mobile home.
