Friday
• Gaston Chapel will have a canned food giveaway from 5 to 7 p.m.
• Victory Chapel Church will present the drama, "Are You Ready?" at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited. Call Pastor Johnny McCarty at 430-8908 or Joy at 391-1260.
• Free live nativity, hosted by Silver Creek Baptist Church, will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. today and Saturday at Pilot Mountain School, US 64 S.
• A Course in Miracles study group will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Morganton Public Library's lower-level meeting room. This group helps students achieve inner peace through greater awareness and understanding about themselves. Call 438-4074.
Saturday
• St. Luke Holiness Church of God will host a yard sale at 8 a.m. at Roses parking lot.
• First Assembly, 1955 US 70 E., will present "The Cradle that Rocked the World" at 7 p.m. today and at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Call 433-6171.
• Bethel Church of Christ, 415 Bethel Road, will present its combined Christmas Cantata, "Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord" at 6 p.m. A reception will follow the program.
• First Baptist Church, Hildebran, will present, "It's a Wonder-full Life" at 6 p.m. This dinner theater production's menu includes lasagna, salad, breadsticks, dessert and a drink for $10 for adults and $5 for children 4-10 and under 3 free. Free admission without meal. Special encore on Sunday does not include meal.
• Hallelujah Square, 3025 Jamestown Road, will host The Gospel Way. Free admission, coffee and desserts. Doors open at 5 p.m. Singing at 6 p.m. Call 430-9958.
• The Lighthouse, 212 Walker Road, thanks those who supported them this year. They are closed for the winter but are looking forward to seeing everyone in the spring when it reopens.
Sunday
• The Rev. Jim Taber will hold his annual Candlelight Christmas Concert at the First Advent Christian Church, 211 Lenoir Road, at 6 p.m. Taber will sing many favorite Christmas songs. This concert is free to the public.
• The children of El Bethel Baptist Church, NC 181, 1.5 miles north of K-Mart, will present "The Christmas Story" at 6 p.m. This is a musical drama for the whole family.
Monday
• Angel Food Yumm, a free community meal at First United Methodist Church, Valdese, is served from 4:30 to 6 p.m. every Monday. Call 874-0006.
Tuesday
• The Christian Business Men's Connection of Burke County meets for lunch at noon Tuesdays in the Morganton Community House. It's non-denominational, open to the public, with no membership fees or requirements and no reservations needed. Newcomers can network with area businessmen and professionals. • Burke United Christian Ministries provides assistance for working families and seniors without transportation from 5 to 7 p.m. on every second and third Tuesday night of the month. Assistance includes food, clothing, emergency financial assists and soup-kitchen meals. Basic eligibility requirement is proof of employment (at least 30 hours). Picture ID required for new clients. Financial assists require utility-disconnect notices. Clients will be seen on first-come, first-served basis.
Wednesday
• AWANA from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church is for ages 3 (potty-trained, please) through 12th grade. Food, fun and games. Parents may worship at 7 p.m. with Pastor Dewayne Buchanan.
• Stepping Out for Jesus at 6 p.m. is for youth at Bethel United Methodist Church. Food and games for all.
• Outreach Wednesdays are on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. A meal is served.
• "Knitwits," a prayer shawl ministry at Oak Hill United Methodist Church, invites anyone who knits, crochets or does other lapwork of any skill level, or who wants to learn, to meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays in the fellowship hall. Bring a project and a covered dish to share. Free and open to all. Call 433-5308.
• The Joy Group (Just Older Youth) of Drexel First Baptist Church is expanding its membership. Rehearsals are at 4 p.m. Bingo and trips are scheduled throughout the year. New members welcome.
Miscellaneous
• Foothills Service Project's second store at 123 Main Ave. W., Hildebran, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Donations are accepted at this location. Proceeds support Foothills Service Project Ministry.
• Good Samaritan Clinic, a free medical clinic for Burke County residents, needs licensed MOAs, nurses and LPNs as volunteers. Come by the clinic, 305 W. Union St., to fill out a volunteer application between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 439-9945.
• Burke United Christian Ministries needs food harvesters to pick up donated food and assistant food harvesters for heavy lifting and help in the food pantry Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. Call Phyllis Chapman at 433-8075 Ext. 247 or e-mail pchapman@bucm.net.
• The Nehemiah Center is accepting registrations from young men who want to take part in The Nehemiah 8:10 Program that works with 7- to 13-year-olds. This free program includes career guidance, communication and social skills, fishing, mountain climbing, train and plane rides, camping and other activities throughout the year that engage young people's minds and spirits. • North Morganton United Methodist Wee School has begun registration for the 2008-09 school year. Classes are for 2, 3 and 4 year olds. A parents morning out drop-in day care program is offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Call Sharon at 437-3418.
