Icard — Minus some of Hibriten High's wrestling team, East Burke High took advantage and won the match on Wednesday at East Burke.
For the Cavaliers, many on the team just started back wrestling this week after East Burke was eliminated from the 4A football playoffs last Friday.
With that said, the 2008-09 wrestling season opened with the Cavs winning 54-24, with a mixture of veterans and rookies on the East Burke team.
Starting the match at the 152-pound weight class, the Cavs picked up six quick points when Aaron Queen registered a 35 second pin over his opponent.
Three forfeits later, two by Hibriten and the 189 class by East Burke, had the Cavs up 18-6 when the actual wrestling started again. Caleb Lowman picked up a first period pin in the 215 weight class, followed by state 4A-ranked Tyler Shatley winning by pin in the heavyweight division in 63 seconds. Going back to the light-weight divisions, East Burke was ahead 30-6 on the scoreboard.
Hibriten picked up the forfeit in the 103 class before Cavalier Tyler Cook pinned his 112 class competition in one minute and 41 seconds.
Hibriten captured the 119 class by pin before BJ Tomlin won a full length match with a nice 13-7 point score at 125 pounds. At 130, Cavalier Eric Street wrestled to a 7-4 decision, followed by a Panther pin at 135 for a 42-24 East Burke lead. Tough Billy Abee started his Senior season with big expectations as he gained a second period pin in a very competitive 140 class, and in the finale, the 145-pound class, Cavalier Cory Childers picked up the second fastest pinfall of the night with a 39 second win.
East Burke finished with six pins, two wins by forfeits, and two decision wins for 10 out of 14 weight classes going to the Cavs for 54 points. Hibriten picked up two pins and two forfeits for 24 points.
East Burke Coach Junior Lail was pleased with the results of the first match of the year.
"We should be alright when the football players who just came in get their timing right and get in wrestling shape, and we work out the weight divisions a little better," coach Junior Lail said. "I still need to find a 189 class wrestler, and might have to get someone's weight down to go in that crucial spot. I am expecting a good, competitive season from my team this year, as we have a mix of old and new guys. We need some mat time to see what we have this year, and the team is looking forward to next Tuesday's quad meet at Draughn."
