MORGANTON - Weighing in with three pounds of meat and bread, Dough Boys Pizzeria Café's unnamed burger is possibly the largest hamburger in Burke County.
Dough Boys, 410 E. Fleming Drive, started serving the burger on Saturday.
About four people now order it each day, owner Daniel Dolinger said.
Naming rights to the burger will go to the person who manages to eat it and a side of fries in less than 30 minutes. Customers can add any toppings including cheese, chili or cole slaw, Dolinger said.
Everything about this sandwich is big. It takes 20 minutes just to cook it, Dolinger said. Some customers make appointments to have one ready and waiting.
Fong Lee of Morganton said he ate a quarter of the burger and felt pretty confident about finishing. Then things took a turn for the worse when he started eating the fries. Lee said he ended up eating only half the burger.
"I don't think anyone can finish it," Lee said. "I was stuffed. I couldn't get up."
Although the burger is large, Lee said Dough Boys didn't sacrifice flavor for size. He's recommending the sandwich to his friends, both for the taste and the challenge.
Russell Freeman of Morganton gave Dolinger the idea of adding the big burger to Dough Boys' menu. He used to order a burger this size at Snow Hills in Marion, but that shop closed down.
Freeman said he's finished a two-pound burger in the past, but he can't do it easily anymore. He tried Dough Boys' burger and only finished three-quarters.
"I can't do it in that time limit," Freeman said. "Somebody will, though."
Dolinger said neither he nor any of his employees have attempted to finish the burger.
He expects someone will meet the challenge, though.
"I'm wondering what it's going to be called," Dolinger said.
