Friday
- Pastor appreciation services honoring Bishop Aaron Shawn Hooper will be held today through Sunday at St. Luke Christian Holiness Church of God, 126 Brookside Lane. 7 p.m. today with guest speaker Bishop E.L. Gray. 6 p.m. Saturday with a banquet held at Gastonia Chapel A.M.E. Church. 3 p.m. Sunday with guest speaker Apostle Lenole Brown.
- A Course in Miracles study group from noon to 1:30 p.m. Fridays at the Morganton Public Library's lower-level meeting room helps students achieve inner peace through greater awareness and understanding about themselves. Call 438-4074.
Saturday
- First Advent Christian Church, 211 Lenoir Road, will host a health fair from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Free screenings will include lipid panels, breathing and oxygen levels, bone scans and blood pressure checks. Flu shots will be given. Medicare, Medicaid and state health plans cover the cost; bring your cards with you. The price for those without coverage will be $31. Fundraiser breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m.
- Brookwood Baptist Church will host a breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Menu includes eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, pancakes, juice, coffee and sweets for $5 for adults and $3 for children.
- Catawba Valley Baptist Church, 706 Lenoir Road across from Walter R. Johnson Middle School, will have a breakfast, baked goods and yard sale from 6:30 to 10 a.m.
- Drexel First Church of God, 200 Oakland Ave., will have a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Angel Food orders for October will be taken at First United Methodist Church, Valdese, from 10 a.m. to noon. A generous market basket of top quality groceries including meats is offered for $30. No qualifying and food stamps accepted. Pick up date is Oct. 25. Call 874-0006 for menu and details.
- Linville United Methodist Church of NC 126 will have its semi-annual country ham supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Menu includes country ham or chicken, mashed potatoes, red-eye gravy, green beans, coleslaw, biscuits, homemade desserts and beverage for $7 for adults and $4 for children. Dine in or carry out.
- El Bethel's Baptist Church choir is hosting a dinner theater event at 5 p.m. entitled, "Hoe Down at the Old Corral." Cost is $10 and all proceeds go toward the purchase of a new piano. There will singing, fellowship and fun.
- Hallelujah Square, 3025 Jamestown Road, will host a new group to this area, The Inmons at 7 p.m. Free admission and coffee. Doors open at 6 p.m. Call 430-9958.
- The Lighthouse, 212 Walker Road, will host The Blairs from Nebo. Free admission, coffee and snacks. Doors open at 5 p.m. Singing at 6 p.m. Call 584-3697.
Sunday
- The City of Morganton and The Gospel Enforcers will present the annual Martin Luther King Gospel Fest from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mountain View Recreation Center ball field. Special guests include Lil' Blair and the Fantastic Violinaries, along with Eternity, Rodney Patton and Choir and many more. Booths may be reserved at the Collett Street Recreation Center.
- Enon Baptist Church will celebrate its 139th Homecoming at 11 a.m. A covered dish will follow. Guest speaker will be the Rev. John Coffee.
- Calvin Heights Baptist Church will have high attendance day. Breakfast served every Sunday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Deacon ordination during the 11 a.m. service and a chicken pie dinner after the morning service. Menu includes chicken pie, dessert and drink for $5.
- The Wilbanks Singers from Houston, Texas, will minister in song at 10 a.m. at Truth Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church, 103 Seventh St. NE in Hildebran. Admission is free. Call 397-7394 or visit www.truthtabernacle.info.
- Amherst Baptist Church will have revival services today through Wednesday at 7 pm. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Marty Bess.

- Christian comedian Derwin Henson will be at United Baptist Church, 2638 Messer Road, Valdese, at 7 p.m.
- The 11th annual Catherine Rink Williams Memorial Scholarship tea will be held at 4 p.m. at Green St. Presbyterian Church. Don't forget to wear your hat.
- Chapel of Rest, NC 268, Happy Valley (nine miles north of Lenoir) will present Acoustic Dessert, a chamber music trio from Asheville at 4 p.m. A dessert reception with the artists will follow. Admission is $8.
Monday
- Angel Food Yumm, a free community meal at First United Methodist Church in Valdese, is served from 4:30 to 6 p.m. every Monday. Call 874-0006.
Tuesday
- Morganton Area Ministerial Association breakfast meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. at Grace Hospital cafeteria. This meeting is open to all clergy and ministerial staff in the Morganton area of Burke County. Call Jasper Hemphill at 439-8893 or Bake Garman at 433-1147.
- The Christian Business Men's Connection (www.cbmc.com) of Burke County meets for lunch at noon Tuesdays in the Morganton Community House. This non-denominational event is open to the public. There are no membership fees or requirements. No reservations needed. This is an opportunity for newcomers to network with area businessmen and professionals. Call 437-6285.
- Burke United Christian Ministries provides assistance for working families and seniors without transportation from 5 to 7 p.m. on every second and third Tuesday night of the month. Assistance includes food, clothing, emergency financial assists and soup-kitchen meals. Basic eligibility requirement is proof of employment (at least 30 hours). Picture ID required for new clients. Financial assists require utility-disconnect notices. Clients will be seen on first-come, first-served basis.
Wednesday
- St. James Church of God, NC 126 will have pastor appreciation services for Pastor A.B. Corpening at 7 p.m. nightly starting today through Oct. 10. Services conclude at 3 p.m. on Oct. 12.
- AWANA from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church for ages 3 (potty-trained, please) through 12th grade. Food, fun and games. Parents are invited to worship at 7 p.m. with Pastor Dewayne Buchanan.
- Stepping Out for Jesus at 6 p.m. for youth at Bethel United Methodist Church. Food and games for all.
n Outreach Wednesdays are on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. A meal is served.
- "Knitwits," a prayer shawl ministry at Oak Hill United Methodist Church, invites anyone who knits, crochets or does other lapwork of any skill level, or who wants to learn, to meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays in the fellowship hall. - The Joy Group (Just Older Youth) of Drexel First Baptist Church is expanding its membership. Rehearsals are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. Choir members come from seven churches in the area. Lunch follows the rehearsal. Bingo and trips are scheduled throughout the year. New members welcome.

- Restoration Christian Outreach Family Worship has moved to 203-A Rockyford St. During September the church will be celebrating Pastor A.F. Reese Anniversary Month at 11 a.m. on Sunday's.
- Foothills Service Project's second store at 123 Main Ave. W., Hildebran, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Donations are accepted at this location. Proceeds support Foothills Service Project Ministry.
- Good Samaritan Clinic, a free medical clinic for Burke County residents, needs licensed MOAs, nurses and LPNs as volunteers. Come by the clinic at 305 W. Union St. to fill out a volunteer application between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 439-9945.

- The Nehemiah Center is accepting registrations from young men who want to take part in The Nehemiah 8:10 Program that works with 7- to 13-year-olds.
