Fall exposition — The Art of Science, "A Hands-on Approach to the Created World." Come enjoy the marvelous structure of the created world. Contributions to the exposition are ceramics by Trice Ward and JoAnna Fireman from the Center for Ceramic Arts in Asheville, collectables from The Catawba Science Center Gift Shop, Art 101 earth and sky paintings, nature paintings by regional and local artists, as well as many other pieces depicting our corner of creation.

Apple Hill Orchard and Cider Mill — 2075 Pleasant Hill Ave., Morganton. 437-1224. Hosting orchard wagon tours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday and you-pick apples from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Educational tours are offered by reservation Monday through Friday. The orchard has a picnic shelter, country store and bakery.
Halloween
special events
Morganton Ghosts and goblins of Burke County will once again swarm downtown Morganton for the annual Downtown Trick-or-Treating and Halloween Carnival. More than 35 merchants will be handing out treats from 3 to 5 p.m. New this year, free horse-drawn hay rides from 3 to 6 p.m. Come to the Courthouse Square from 3 to 6 p.m. for a free Halloween carnival including games and a costume contest compliments of the City of Morganton Recreation Department. Valdese Merchants Association will sponsor its annual Treats in the Streets. Local merchants will hand out candy from 3 to 5 p.m. and costume judging will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Wachovia parking lot. Call 879-2129.
Table Rock Middle School's student council is hosting its sixth annual Boo Bash from 5 to 7 p.m. Bring canned food to donate to families in need. Hot dog plates from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for $4. Trick-or-treat from 5 to 7 p.m.
Autumn Care of Drexel will hand out treats in the front lobby from 5 to 7 p.m. All children are welcome.
Morganton Elks Lodge No. 1852, Golf Course Road, will host its annual Halloween Party/Dance from 8 to midnight. Grier Franklin and Friends will provide the dance music for the evening. The Elks Lodge will provide light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be open. Admission is $10 per person at the door with a prize for the best costume. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. This dance/party is open to the general public.
VFW Post No. 5362 will hand out Halloween treats to children from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. They will also host a benefit for Garret Queen with a barbecue dinner at 6:30 p.m. for $5 and a dance at 8 p.m. for $5. Call 437-0427.
