VALDESE - Balsam Range will begin the Blue Grass at the Rock season at the Old Rock School in Valdese at 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 4.
Based in Haywood County, Balsam Range consists of five men native to this region "where the Smokies meet the Blue Ridge."
Bluegrass says a lot of what this band is about, but equally important are the aspects of gospel and country music.
All the fellows in the band grew up in the rich musical heritage of the Appalachian South, surrounded by culture and heritage steeped in traditions of The Grand Ole Opry, as well as the important influences of the Scotch-Irish settlers of the Southern Mountains, English ballads, Western songs and tunes written by the band members themselves.
These very talented individuals have united to form one of the greatest sounds in the bluegrass world. Individually and as a group they have played with many well known entertainers such as Tony Rice, Rhonda Vincent, Doyle Lawson, Vince Gill, Alecia Nugent, Joe Diffie, Jim VanCleve, Jerry Salley, Bryan Sutton, Raymond Fairchild, the Crowe Bros. and many more.
Three Mile Creek, a local band from Valdese, will open the show. This band is a unique family band consisting of mom, dad and seven of their children (ranging in age 4 to 20). Their repertoire includes both gospel and bluegrass music that is heartfelt and hard driving.
With so many family members in the band, there are numerous combinations of duo, trios, quartets and instrumentals that include banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar and acoustic bass.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. For ticket information and or reservations, call 879-2129 or go to www.bluegrassattherock.com for this season's schedule.
