Connelly Springs - The steps you take before you hike could keep you on track and may even save your life.
Whether you are an experienced backpacker or a tenderfoot, South Mountains State Park wants to help you prepare for your adventure.
Rangers are offering park visitors a quick course on the "10 Essentials for a Day-hike." The program is designed to recommend what a hiker needs to stay safe and comfortable for a short trail visit.
The pack essentials include some items that may only be needed in an emergency. Getting off course is easy to do, however, and can leave hikers facing conditions they aren't ready for.
"The first thing people need to understand is to keep focused and use common sense," said Park Ranger Lance Huss. "If people panic when they get lost, it can be dangerous."
The Essentials
1. A map
2. A compass
A topographical map of the area is the best kind to get, said Huss. One that shows elevation. "Orient yourself and have a game plan," Huss said. A map and compass won't be useful if you don't know how to use them properly. South Mountains State Park also offers programs that help visitors learn how to follow both.
3. A headlamp or flashlight:
Huss reminds visitors to check batteries and bulbs before going out on each hike, and carry extra when possible.
4. Extra food:
Carry more food than you believe you will need. "It's easy to underestimate the number of calories expended while hiking," said Huss.
5. Extra clothing:
Dress in layers. Be aware that nighttime in the mountains can get cold.
6. Sunglasses
7. First aid supplies:
Items such as gauze, latex gloves, an emergency blanket, alcohol swabs, ace bandages, bandage tape, safety pins and a triangular bandage may be needed following an injury. The key is to keep your first aid kit lightweight and waterproof.
8. Pocket knife
9. Matches
10. Fire starter
Extending beyond 10 items, rangers and hikers agree there are a few more things considered essential for your trek.
11. Water
12. A whistle:
Carrying a small device that makes sound can help searchers find you if you become lost.
"Bringing the proper equipment will add to your enjoyment and safety," says Huss. "If you have the 10 essentials, making it through a cold and wet night will be easier."
While preparing for your hike, it is always important to let a family member or friend know where you are going.
