Brawl breaks out in stands at basketball game

Morganton - Seen and heard in Drexel — Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Brookshire were changing things around in their grocery store … Sanitary Barber Shop barbers Lawrence Anthony and Midas Childress had a bunch of youngsters waiting to get their hair cut … Butch Powell is the shine boy … Luther Stamey, Milton Cooper and June Deal are busy as bees listing taxes.
• Friends buzzing in anticipation of seeing Mrs. Richard S. Ogletree on "The Price Is Right" television program. Mr. Ogletree, who is a sales manager for Shadowline, went to New York on a business trip and his wife accompanied him. Among the gifts she won were a 1959 Edsel and a cruise.
• Judy Brandon and Barbara Scott were honored on their 16th birthdays with a dance at the Community House. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Brandon and Mr. and Mrs. Dysart Scott, sponsored the event with 150 guests attending.
• Was it a satellite? Mrs. Clyde Denton of Enola wasn't sure what she saw in the sky. Her neighbor, Mrs. Harley Prewitt spotted the same object. Later, Mrs. Carl Horne reported seeing the same bright object.
• Tommy Biggerstaff burned the nets for 25 points at Old Fort to lead the Glen Alpine Green Waves to a close 48-41 Skyline Conference victory.
• Anna Belle Browning became the bride of Walter Joe Carswell at Mt. Home Baptist Church. Their wedding was the first to be performed in the new church.
• Seen and heard in West Burke — Mrs. Hannie Curtis wrapped up for the cold weather … Ed Mull and Crawford Melton enjoying a chat while Ed was propped against a car … "Scott's Weather Stripping" on the back of Buck Scott … Marie Keller wearing a new diamond ring … Hampie Bobbit wearing a red jacket ... Dick Waller smoking a pipe while driving ... Russ Gaylord carrying a large package plus a bag of oranges.
• Sgt. Everette Carpenter, now stationed in Germany, recently sent home a 1958 horseshoe trophy as singles champion he won while overseas.
• At Lenoir-Rhyne's game with Western Carolina College all the action was not on the court. Spectators staged a knock-down, drag-out fight of their own. Several bodies came flying over the iron railings. Police and college officials finally brought the melee under control. Western Carolina won the game 69-58, but it was unknown who won the unscheduled battle.
• The Morganton Civitan Club reported that it sold 3,250 pounds of fruitcake during the holidays.
• The 63rd Food Service Squadron at Greenville Air Force Base in South Carolina named airman First Class Lloyd R. Soublet Airman of the Month.
• Bits from J.Gordon Queen — Years ago when there was a fire in Morganton folks would yell "fire" and all the factory whistles would start blowing … At one time Henry Gaston was the first manager of Caldwell Hotel … Betty Jean Church seen toting two vases out North King … Jo Ann Allman and Claudette Brown caught right in the middle of the drag jay walking while Mrs. Clarence Wiseman laughed merrily … Dr. W.H. Patton Jr. unwinding himself out of a midget car … Redheaded Ray Dula and Doug Jaynes toting handfuls of arrows up the drag … Wilma O'Horn of the Rainbow Grill giving a friendly New Year laugh … Sign in Simpson and Simpson law office: A lawyer's time and advice are his stock in trade …. Deputy Till Cline making short work of a Coca Cola … Desk Sergeant Hardy McGalliard reading his Bible at the police station … Norman Bugress gulping down a doughnut … Overheard from H.S. Prevatte, "She is so conceited she broke her arm patting herself on the back" … Louise Whisnant mad as a hornet when she saw a parking ticket on her car … Jack Campbell, minister of music at First Baptist, climbing atop his car and pulling a stranded cat out of a tree by its hind legs.
