VALDESE - The Town of Valdese's July 4 celebration starts Friday and continues Saturday downtown and at the Trail of Faith.
As part of the Family Friday Night Series, Harry Deal and the Galaxies will perform at 7 p.m. Friday in the Wachovia parking lot.
Brothers Harry and Jimmy Deal from Taylorsville formed the band 40 years ago.
They first made their claim as the "Kings of Beach Music" during the 1960s at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion and their music continues to be associated with the Carolina Shag.
Valdese's main street will be closed Friday evening for the antique/classic cruise-in and there will be free tram rides. Several of the downtown merchants will keep their doors open later and Cornerstone Antiques and Coffee Shop will offer a free wine tasting. Their selection of wine will be from the Waldensian Heritage Winery.
The Trail of Faith, 401 Church St. N., celebrates from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday with children's rides and live entertainment.
Admission is free; trail tours are $2; entrance to the Kid's Park is $2.
Highlights include:
• Barbecue, hamburgers and hotdogs by Judge's BBQ
• Ice cream, snow cones, cotton candy and fresh-squeezed lemonade
• Kid's park water slide, bounce rides and batting cage.
• Hit-and-miss engine with homemade ice cream.
•$100 drawing.
• Guest speaker Vernon M. Rader, a former POW, from Morganton.
• A salute to military personnel and veterans.
• A Black Hawk flyover.
• Featured music from Daybreak Quartet and The Kistler Family
Live entertaining kicks off downtown at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Wachovia parking lot with the Extraordinaires.
Formed in the spring of 2003 from a group of guys who love the classics/rhythm and blues, the Extraordinaires have put together a unique blend of music.
A fireworks show behind the Old Rock School concludes the evening.
