Filing period for election opens

MORGANTON - The filing period for the Nov. 3 election starts Monday.

Filing opens at 8 a.m. Monday and runs through noon on July 17.

Four seats are up for grabs this year on the Burke County Board of Education. The seats open are the western district, currently held by Buddy Armour, the central district, currently held by Tracy Norman, the western district, currently held by John Aulgur, and the eastern district, currently held by Sam Wilkinson.

The filing fee for the board of education is $20.

Seats on town councils in the county this year include:
• Connelly Springs: Mayor and three aldermen. The filing fee is $5.
• Drexel: Mayor and two aldermen. The filing fee for aldermen is $5. The fee for mayor is $10.
• Glen Alpine: Mayor and three aldermen. The filing fee is $5.
• Hildebran: Mayor and three council members. The filing fee is $5.
• Rutherford College: Mayor and three council members. The filing fee is $15.
• Valdese: Mayor and three council members. The filing fee for mayor is $15 and the fee for council members is $10.

Candidates can file for election at the Burke County Board of Elections, 201 W. Meeting St., Morganton. Call the Burke County Board of Elections at 433-1703.

Also up this year are elections to the Morganton City Council. The city has its own board of elections and conducts its own elections.

This year's city elections will be held Oct. 6.

The filing period starts at 8 a.m. Monday and ends at noon July 17.

The two seats up this year are council district 3, currently held by John Cantrell, and Council District 4, currently held by Alfred Hamer, Jr. Candidates have to live within the district for which they are running.

The filing fee to run for a seat on the city council is $20. Candidates can file at City Hall, 305 E. Union St., Suite A100, Morganton. Call 437-8863.

According to information from the city of Morganton, recent changes in the law require all candidates to have a treasurer and detailed records must be kept regarding contributions and expenditures. The treasurer must attend a training seminar sponsored by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
