East Burke High student-athlete Tanner Anderson qualified for the United States National Track and Field Finals with a high jump of 6 feet, 8 inches at the state event on May 23. Anderson is seen here taking that jump. Anderson, at the time, was ranked No. 4 in the nation in the high jump event. At the Western 4A Regional, he jumped 7-feet, 2-1/2-inches, the second-highest jump in the history of North Carolina high school track and field competition. "I'm kind of surprised about it myself," he said at the time. East Burke won the 4A Western Regional for the first time in school history and Coach Odell Williams was named Northwestern 4A Conference Coach of the Year.
