Take advantage of all the free programs, materials and events offered by your library. Start with Summer Reading Program.
This is our biggest and best Summer Reading Program ever. The library is sponsoring three programs this year. One for children ages 2 to12. Another for those who are rising middle school, middle school or high school students, and for those who are a bit older the library will also have a program for adults. Come by and register now at any library location. Check out our Web site for more information about all three programs at www.bcpls.org.
Calling all rising middle, middle school and high school students to the front lawn of the Morganton Public Library at 6 p.m. Monday for "War of the Worlds." This is the night teens will battle aliens to save the Earth by playing laser tag, ice skating on a 48x58 ice skating rink with a live DJ and snow for effects, and dipping your hand into hot wax to make a mold of your hand. The wax will not burn your hand. Will you be able to rid the earth of the aliens in time to enjoy ice skating in the summer and decorating your own wax hand? This program is free and open to all rising middle, middle school, and high school students.
Experience the unknown with the library and the Schiele Museum at 1 and 2 p.m. Tuesday with a class at the Morganton Public Library. Young Adults will climb into an inflatable planetarium to learn about constellations, myths of stars, origins of the universe and is Darth Vader really Luke Skywalker's father? This is a pre-registration class only for rising middle, middle school and high school students. Teens wanting to participate should call 437-5638 Ext.1214.
At 2 p.m. on Friday at the Morganton Public Library the Young Adults will have a Hemp & Beaded Jewelry/Button Making workshop. Make and wear your own designer jewelry. The library will supply cool beads and hemp to make anklets, bracelets, rings or necklaces. We will also give participants the opportunity to create cool buttons to wear on their shirts, pocketbooks or bags. Button designs can be created by participants or patterns will be provided.
Also, at 5 p.m. on Friday, Young Adults are invited to watch the movie "Princess Diaries" based on the book Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot. Popcorn and soda will be provided at no cost. All Young Adult programs are free and open to rising middle, middle, and high school students. For more information concerning Young Adult events, visit www.bcpls.org or call 437-5638.
The children's "Be Creative" Summer Reading Program enters its second week with the theme of "Ham it Up." The Harlequin Mime will perform a "Mime and Magic" at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Valdese Public Library and at 2 p.m. at the Morganton Public Library.
The Adult Summer Reading Program is off to a fast start with more than 100 participants. You can still register, get a free paperback book and get in on the fun. Wayne Caldwell, author of "Cataloochee" will speak at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Morganton Public Library. "Cataloochee" will also be discussed at the Valdese Public Library at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Want to e-mail family and friends but don't know how to get online and get started? Then this week's computer class is just for you. Sign up for one of two sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. or from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Friday at the Morganton Public Library for "Intro to E-mail."
