Filling packs for needy students, homeless people

MORGANTON - Packs & Prayers is Burke United Christian Ministries' two-fold effort to help both homeless people and school children in desperate need of basic supplies this fall.
The number of homeless individuals and families is on the rise, especially young people between 16 and 20, according to BUCM.
Packs & Prayers will provide the homeless with a sturdy backpack and basic essentials such as a blanket, socks, a shirt, hygiene items, a can opener and canned foods plus a small Bible.
Many families in Burke County are struggling just to provide basic essentials, so needy school-age children will get backpacks filled with school supplies, snacks, hygiene items and other essentials, as well as a Bible story book.
It costs about $20 to fill a pack. To make a donation and help defray the cost, mail checks to Burke United Christian Ministries, 305B W. Union St., Morganton, NC 28655.
