HILDEBRAN - A thief who broke into East Burke Christian Ministries, 204 S. Center St., stole a computer containing more than 1,000 Social Security numbers of clients, ministry Directory Carolyn Yoder said.

The theft occurred sometime between 1 p.m. Thursday and Monday morning, when Yoder's assistant discovered shattered glass and two broken doors, Yoder said.

The laptop contained information for East Burke Christian Ministries' clients from 2008 until now, Yoder said. That mainly affects residents in eastern end of the county.

Yoder said the organization, on the advice of law enforcement, would be mailing a letters to all the clients who are affected.

In addition to the laptop, the suspect took petty cash from a drawer, Yoder said. Nothing else was taken from the building.

Yoder told The News Herald's broadcast news partner WSOC-TV 9, "The problems that this could cause for Christian Ministries and our clients is great, so have a heart — bring it back."

According to WSOC, sheriff's deputies are visiting local pawn shops, trying to recover the stolen laptop.

Deputies said clients of East Burke Christian Ministries should monitor their credit accounts for any suspicious activity.
