Dayton, Tenn. - A months-long search for a new Rhea County Public Schools superintendent may end Wednesday when the school board is expected to choose one of four final candidates.
David Burleson of Morganton, Burke County Public Schools superintendent, is one of the four.
Two candidates are local: Rebecca Isaacs, current assistant superintendent of Rhea County, and Jerry Levengood, current principal of Rhea County High School. The fourth is Bob Lovingood from Vonore, Tenn.
If the board chooses one of the out-of-county candidates, he will relocate to the area, according to contract requirements for the superintendent.
School board chairman Ron Masterson told the Rhea County News-Herald the board has gotten to know each candidate on a personal level.
"For me personally, this is the hardest decision I've ever had to make," Masterson told reporter Michelle Friesen. "We have some extremely fine candidates and each one brings a lot to the table."
Masterson predicted that the board would require more than one round of votes before settling on one contender, based on the difficulty of the choice.
The current superintendent is retiring effective June 30 and his replacement is expected to start July 1.
Burleson's contract with the Burke County school system ends June 30.
