Predators, crawdads and camp songs were are just a few of the topics explored by New Dimensions Charter School's third-grade class while on a three-day, two-night environmental education trip to Betsy-Jeff Penn's 4-H Center in Reidsville April 7 - 9.
The students took part in habitat surveys, learned about night vision and waded into a creek to study the insect life. The hands-on field trip activities reinforced topics covered in Ms. Stanton's classroom through the school's Core Knowledge curriculum.
One particularly challenging activity was entitled "cooperative games."
Sixteen third graders lined up randomly, standing on a rope and then arranged themselves in order of birthdates without stepping off the rope and without speaking a word. The class did it in less than 10 minutes.
The New Dimensions Charter School is a tuition-free, public K-5 school located on East Concord Street in Morganton. For more information, visit www.newdimensionschool.org.
