Morganton, NC - It's November and there's no frost yet
n Cheerleaders in the rain were not minding it a bit as they cheered the Wildcats to a 20-7 win against the Marion Rippers. The cheerleaders were Roberta Webb, Jan Taylor, Susan Huffman, Becky Browning, Cookie Wilson, Bunnie Salisbury and Ann Coffey.
n Dennis Bradley led the Wildcats' offense with 70 yards in 13 carries, including a 23-yard run for the first touchdown in the second quarter.
n Two young boys were cited on Senior Recognition Day for their achievements at McCallie School. They are Rawley Speir and Jimmy Braddock.
n Mr. and Mrs. James McFadden and their son, Stephen James, have moved to Marion where Mr. McFadden will be head coach at Marion High School.
n Dr. J.B. Helms is taking a ribbing about his son James' being enrolled at UNC-CH and not Wake Forest. Dr. Helms is trustee and former alumni president of the Baptist college and the lad's brothers have been or currently are at the school. His mother complained that James did not write very often and it seemed he was on the other side of the world. James replied, "Yes, and what a nice side it is."
n Still unresolved is who will get the new car purchased by the town of Valdese. Will it be the police department or town manager? Mayor Valdo S. Martinat suggested the matter be given more study.
n Drexel aldermen voted to buy a combination digging and loading machine for the town's work projects.
n Army Pvt. Paul F. Carswell, who attended Drexel High School, recently arrived in Korea and is now a member of the 1st Cavalry Division.
n Judy Kay Barrier, a student at Grace Hospital School of Nursing, was crowned Junior Order Queen for Burkemont Council No. 44. Bill R.Whisnant was honored as the Junior Order's "Man of the Year."
n Mary Lou Avery was hostess to 40 members of the Oak Hill High School senior class at a barn dance in celebration of Halloween. The party was at Swan Ponds Dairy.
n Ben Seals, well-known Chesterfield farmer, watched as three 4-H team captains demonstrated how soil samples are taken. They are Parks Harrison, Vinton Rollins and Bobby McCall.
n Mart Lingerfelt of Piedmont Road proudly displayed an 8-pound sweet potato dug from his garden.
n If you start seeing stars, most likely they are the new star-shaped badges being worn by officers at the Burke County Sheriff's Department.
n Billy and Bobby Luckadoo have been chosen as counselors at Wingate College.
n While questioning a witness in a lawsuit involving land, attorney Frank C. Patton spoke rather derisively of sycamore trees. Several who heard him wondered about his dislike for the tree. He said, "I remember one time when I was a boy, my daddy built a barn of sycamore wood. When the timber dried out it was so warped a mule could walk out of the barn while the stall door was still shut."
n Bits from J. Gordon Queen: Everyone asking why he quit his column for a while. He said he hadn't quit; he was laid up with a heck of a cold for a spell and had no energy to write… At one time there was a drug store called Scruggs in the building occupied by Adler's Betty Lou Shop… Everyone enjoying the Olive Hill parade… The high winds making skirts misbehave badly… A man saying it is Nov. 2 and there's no frost as yet… Mr. and Mrs.Silas Dale having a handsome brick residence erected on Asheville Street… Ed Moses trying to get people to attend Sunday School… Frank Bowers trying to outrun the wind on North Sterling.
