Whitten: Board needs more education and experience

Published: November 1, 2009

Morganton, NC - What the current school board majority has done in Burke County Public Schools has been a disgrace to our educators, our students and their parents and to our community.
Buddy Armour and Sam Wilkinson have stood up against the tyranny. They have shown they will always fight for what is right, not just what the public wants, and they have proven they will protect our children and teachers. They deserve our vote to continue their tenure on the board of education.
Two more seats are open. The obvious choices are Susan Stroup and Catherine Thomas.
Stroup is a recently retired educator and principal. She has earned her superintendent's license. Stroup knows how to run a school and she knows how a public school system should be run. We need another former educator on the board and Stroup is that person.
Catherine Thomas grew up in Morganton and attended Burke County Public Schools. She is a mother and a corporate attorney. She is not only college educated at Wake Forest, she also has a law degree. I think the public has agreed that we need more-educated people on the board. Catherine has shown her will to fight for the students and teachers of this county. Catherine is a straight shooter who says what she means and means what she says.
I voted early and never have I felt better about a vote than when I voted for SWAT. Please join me in voting SWAT!
