Morganton, NC - As a retired elementary teacher with 31 years of service, I can tell you that having a supportive school board is invaluable. Parents, teachers, and administrators do not need the distraction of an ineffectual board.
We are fortunate to have four capable leaders with a variety of skills who are willing to serve our community in this way. Susan Stroup, an experienced and successful motivator, has been a teacher, a counselor and a principal who holds licensure as a superintendent. She is also the parent of a student. Sam Wilkinson has experience as a school board member and spent his entire career with the Burke County schools as a teacher and a coach. Buddy Armour has a business background and also has experience as a board member. Catherine Redman Thomas, an attorney, has experience in writing policy and contracts, overseeing personnel and advising executives on legal and ethical decision-making. Catherine is also the parent of a student.
Three of the candidates are graduates of the Burke County school system. All attended institutions of higher learning. They are distinctive personalities, but they have come together to make a difference in our community.
I have voted for them. I encourage you to seriously consider this opportunity we have to make our school system the best it can be.
