Morganton, NC - Retired elementary school principal Susan Stroup took office today as the newest member of the Burke County Board of Education. In a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. today, following the Burke County Board of Elections' official certification of the Nov. 3 election's results, the chairman of the Burke County Board of Commissioners, Ruth Ann Suttle, administered the oath of office to Stroup.
Stroup will complete David Barnard's unfinished term over the next two years. Barnard resigned from the school board and was temporarily replaced by Nebo businessman John Aulgur. A state statute says a temporary member serves only until voters in a general election fill the seat permanently.
Incumbent school board members Sam Wilkinson and Buddy Armour, who won re-election, and Catherine Thomas, who won the election for a Western District seat, will be sworn in at a 7 p.m. ceremony Dec. 3 in Heritage Middle School.
