MORGANTON - Traffic in front of Patton High School was a little slower than usual Wednesday afternoon when a house caught on fire at 644 Enola Road around 2:30 p.m.
Smoke billowed out from various parts of the small home as firefighters worked to contain the scene.
Salem Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Chief Jason Dale said the fire was contained in one to two rooms of the house. Most of the damage to the home is due to smoke.
The Burke County Fire Marshal's office will investigate the cause of the fire.
Dale said no one was at home at the time of the fire.
Kevin Wilson said his son lives in the residence but was in Boone for the day.
Wilson said the son's grandmother, who lives nearby, saw smoke pouring out of the home and called 911.
His son grew up living in the house, Wilson said.
Enola and Triple Community volunteer fire departments and Burke County REACT also responded to the scene.
