Community Foundation of Burke County has awarded the second round of Recession Response Fund grants to support organizations addressing basic needs including food, shelter/housing, heating and utility assistance and medical/mental health issues exacerbated by the recession.
Organizations receiving grants are Burke United Christian Ministries ($13,000 for crisis relief), East Burke Christian Ministries ($5,000), House of Refuge Ministries ($5,000), Meeting Place One ($3,000 to help open Meeting Place Three) and Shekinah Food Ministry of Oak Ridge Baptist Church ($4,000).
To date, the Community Foundation has awarded $88,500 in Recession Response Fund grants.
Grants Committee Chair Doris Fullwood said, "If we receive more donations to this fund before the end of 2009, we will award additional grants to organizations providing much needed help. We had limited funds, but we hope to be able to award more grants at year end. The Community Foundation has waived its administrative fees, so 100 percent of the money raised will be granted for critical and basic needs in Burke County."
CFBC Executive Director Caroline Avery said, "Our goal in establishing the Recession Response Fund was to give this community a means to help those who are being critically hurt by the economic downturn. Sometimes people want to help, but they are uncertain of what organizations are providing basic needs in the county. CFBC Grants Committee thoroughly reviews applications and tries to fund the applicants that are best meeting the needs of those people affected by the recession. We have been uplifted by the number of Burke County citizens who have contributed to this fund thus far, but we were unable to fund many worthy organizations. We have been touched by the exemplary work and dedication of nonprofits serving our community. We are humbled by the strength of what is possible when we work together."
To help, send tax-deductible donations to the Community Foundation of Burke County, Post Office Box 1156, Morganton, NC 28680. Note that the gift is for the Recession Response Fund.
