Morganton - It was a rough night for Burke County high school football.
East Burke, Freedom, Patton and Draughn High all suffered defeats.
Draughn attempted to recover from a 20-0 halftime deficit to Bunker Hill High. A couple of early second half touchdowns closed the gap but the Wildcats fell 41-20.
In Icard, East Burke fell to new CVAC rival Newton-Conover High 28-6. The game was 14-6 in the fourth quarter when a long interception return for a touchdown doomed the Cavaliers.
Freedom traveled to R-S Central High on Friday for a key South Mountain Athletic Conference 7 game. The Patriots faced a tough team. and fought hard but lost 38-7.
Patton also hit the road for a SMAC 7 conference game. The Panthers had to face perennial power Shelby High. Shelby used a balanced offensive attack to win 35-0.
