Claremont - Defense and special teams proved to be keys as Bunker Hill High defeated visiting Draughn 41-20 on homecoming night.
The Bears got their first Catawba Valley 2A victory on Friday night, improving to 1-2 and are 3-4 overall, while the Wildcats are 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The Bears' special teams took center stage at the outset as Reggie Davis returned the opening kickoff 83-yards for a TD.
After an exchange of possessions, the Bears marched 45 yards in six plays and scored on a 33-yard strike from quarterback Cameron Beard to Mario Coulter for a 13-0 lead.
After the Bunker Hill defense forced another quick three-and-out, the special teams contributed again when John Seagle returned a punt 84 yards for a TD and a 20-0 edge for the Bears.
Bunker Hill's defense limited the Wildcats' offense to 13 yards and two first downs in the first half.
"Our defense played an unbelievable first half," said Bunker Hill head coach Ron Turner. "They definitely set the tone for the game and it was the best our defense has played all year."
Draughn scored midway through the third quarter when Keith Loomis got loose on a 46-yard run to trim the Bears' lead to 20-6.
Bunker Hill came right back, marching 89 yards in seven plays to score on a 2-yard run by Davis for a 27-6 lead.
Draughn answered quickly as Adam Mann burst up the middle for a 60-yard gain. The Wildcats scored on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Powell to Tucker Beck, cutting the lead to 27-14.
But again the Bears' special teams stepped up, with Davontaye Wilson returning the kickoff 50 yards to the Draughn 36. Seven plays later, Davis scored his third TD on an 8-yard run for a 34-14 lead.
"We are just relieved," said Turner of winning. "It's been a long month for us and things haven't went the way we had hoped.
"I think we were embarrassed last week (53-14 loss to South Iredell) starting with me in the way we played.
"We were not prepared and we didn't play and it was bad.
"Our kids took pride in that and had a great week of practice.
"We were ready to go right out of the gate."
Bunker Hill added another score on Beard's second TD strike, a 10-yarder to Chris Propst.
Beard finished 11-of-17 for 167 yards and two scores.
"I think Draughn is an extremely well-coached team who is a little undermanned, which is a feeling we have felt around here," Turner said.
"I told coach Scott Lambert after the game that they absolutely play as hard as they can go, which says a lot for his team and he has a right to be proud of his kids."
