Jacumin won't seek a fourth term in N.C. Senate

Valdese, NC - State Sen. Jim Jacumin will not seek re-election in 2010, the Lenoir News-Topic reported Thursday.
The newspaper said Jacumin told Caldwell County Republican Party Chairman Ron Roukema that he will complete his term during the General Assembly's so-called "short session" in early 2010, but will not try for a fourth term representing the 44th District that covers Burke and Caldwell counties.
Jacumin told the newspaper that concerns about his wife's health prompted the decision.
"I've always tried to put God first, family second and country third," Jacumin told the newspaper. "We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary a year ago. Everything I've been able to do, she has been a part of it. I told her, 'We've got to put you first now.'"
A retired businessman who will turn 73 next month, Jacumin recently told The News Herald he still hopes to convince the legislature next year to pass a bill that would provide economic-development funding to limited liability companies (LLCs), which Jacumin believes will stimulate manufacturing growth.
Jacumin did not return The News Herald's call to his home on Thursday.
Former Caldwell County Democratic Party Chairwoman Dr. Beth Jones already has announced she will run for the 44th District Senate seat in 2010.
