Valdese - Bandys bounced back from last week's 40-12 thumping by East Lincoln to win their CVAC opener on a wet Homecoming at Garry Butler Stadium Friday night. They dominated new CVAC foe Draughn High School by 41-7.
The Trojans used the arm of Kyle Houser and the legs of Trenton Millsaps to take a 27-0 lead into intermission when a large Trojan crowd cheered for new Homecoming Queen Malory Benner.
Houser stayed around long enough in the third quarter to pick up his third TD strike of the night. A 23-yard strike to Cody Hughes put Bandys up 34-0 with seven minutes left in the third quarter.
Running back Trenton Millsaps put the Trojans up early with two short touchdown runs. Dominique Young finished the Bandys scoring off with a six yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter, with 310-pound kicker Robert Gjurai knocking in five of six extra point PAT's.
Draughn put a nice drive together late in the game. With less than six minutes left in the game, Tyler Powell scored Draughn's only touchdown on a quarterback keeper. Wildcat kicker Dustin Abernathy added the PAT.
"We were in an early season must-win deal tonight after the second-half performance we put on against East Lincoln last Friday, and I was proud the way the team came out tonight.
"The conditions were not good, but the guys responded well. Draughn is a very young team, but kept playing hard the entire game. We have a monumental struggle next week against a potent Newton-Conover offense and will need to be hitting on all cylinders to win against the Red Devils," Bandys head coach Randy Lowman said after the big CVAC opening win.
Coach Scott Lambert's young Wildcats outrushed the Trojans in the second half of Friday's loss 113 to 77, with leading rusher Camden Young picking up 40 of a team high 55 yards after intermission.
Special team play was also a positive for Draughn, as Jordan Moore had several nice kickoff returns and punter Alex McGee kicked the ball well, with one punt 53 yards for the Cats.
Number of penalties was another area that Draughn showed great improvement in, since earlier in the season, the Wildcats were flagged two times for 20 yards.
The young offensive and defensive lines played well despite the wet field conditions and the long scoring drive against the Trojan team showed potential.
Next up for the winless Wildcats will be the challenge of playing tough neighbor, and newcomer to the CVAC, East Burke.
The Cavs and Cats will battle at Wildcat Field next Friday. The Cavs won their first CVAC game over Bunker Hill last Friday.
