Comic collectors and fans visited Morganton's 5th Comic-Con on Saturday at the Collett Street Recreation Center. Organized by local collector Barry Sams, the convention offered recognition for local comic artists, as well as the chance for visitors to browse vendors for collectibles.
Chris Gage, a well-known comic book writer, who lives part-time in Burke County, made a surprise visit. Gage was in town to attend the funeral of his nephew, 20-year-old Christian Shull. "Much of my work is dedicated to him," said Gage, "and my wife and I are here to support his family."
Gage created the first Marvel comics character to hail from Morganton, N.C., Emery Schaub, in "Avengers: The Initiative No.13."
