Grant will help feed the needy

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Burke County has been chosen to receive $75,637 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The 2009 grant award amount is a 33 percent increase from the 2008 award and is tied to the number of unemployed individuals in the area.
The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.; The Salvation Army; United Jewish Communities; and United Way of America.
The local Burke board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
A local board made up of representatives from the Dept. of Social Services, American Red Cross, Blue Ridge Community Action, Burke County United Way, and area agencies will determine how the funds awarded to Burke are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area.
The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program. Funds will be allocated in thirds to support emergency food, shelter and rent/utility assistance.
Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary non-profits of units of government; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; if they are a private organization, have a voluntary board; and be eligible to receive federal funds and not be on the disbarred or suspended lists. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.
Public or private agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Sally Learned, the local board chair, at 433-0681 or in care of Burke County United Way, 301 E. Meeting St., Morganton, NC 28655 for an application.
The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on Jan. 23.
