More than 100 friends and relatives braved the cold on Saturday to attend the presentation ceremony for Joshua Lail receiving the Eagle Scout award.
Lail belongs to scout troop No. 202 in Valdese. A scout must earn 21 merit badges to earn Eagle Scout. Eleven of these are required and the remaining 10 are at the scouts choosing. This young man has worked diligently for the past six years to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Joshua is the son Jeff and Penny Lail. He is the grandson of Smoky and Margie Lail and Bennie and Jane Paige.
Scout Master David Hathcock said that, "Joshua has been one of the most determined young men that I have worked with the past 20 years." He went on to say that Lail has shown great compassion as he worked with the younger scouts.
Lail will become an assistant scout master when he turns 18 years old in a few days. His determination shows in the fact that he has never missed a day of school since starting kindergarten to the present time in his senior year. His plans for the future are to become an anesthesiologist. He would like to attend Western Carolina and has been accepted at Lenoir Rhyne College.
Sen. Jim Jacumin, his wife, Nancy, Sheriff John McDevitt, and Valdese Mayor Jim Hatley, were among the guests in attendance for the presentation. Sen. Jacumin read a presentation congratulating Lail and stating that only one out of every 100 scouts achieve the honor of Eagle Scout.
The ceremony was held in the Rex Allen Theater in Icard.
