    After contributing to three successive quarters of increasing retail sales, Burke County shoppers cut their spending in the final quarter of 2008. Taxable retail sales in Burke County fell 4.6 percent, compared to the same month in 2007, the N.C. Department of Revenue reports.

  • Aging gracefully

    Burke County's population is getting older.According to a story on Forbes magazine's Web site, the county is one of the fastest aging counties in the U.S. It was ranked third among the top 20 fastest growing counties, according to forbes.com.The story — "America's Fastest-Aging Counties" by Lauren Sherman — says Burke County saw a nearly 7-percent increase in the senior population in the past five years and just a .03 percent increase in overall population.

  • Let the voting begin

    After nearly two years of stump speeches, debates and advertise-ments, folks in Burke County will finally get to cast a ballot. One Stop early voting starts Thursday at seven locations in the county. Early voting runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Oct. 21 and Oct. 23, when voting will be extended to 8 p.m. Early voting ends at 1 p.m. on Nov. 1.

  • Decreased insurance is expected to Icard homeowners

    With Icard Township Fire Rescue's improved International Organization for Standardization score some homeowners in Icard can look forward to a decrease in their homeowner's insurance."We are proud of the rate change. It reflects the service provided," Fire Chief Brand Lingerfelt said. "The department is striving to provide the fire district with the best protection class we can."Lingerfelt said the new ISO rating of a 5, down from a split score of 5/9s, will mostly affect outlying areas of the Icard district.

  • Drug store opts out of Eastern Burke

    Walgreens won't be coming to Hildebran anytime soon. Phil Bolduc, managing partner of Phillip Andrew Development in Durham, said his company has withdrawn its contracts to develop a site along U.S. 70. That's because Walgreens representatives have told him "they're not pursuing that location at this time," Bolduc said.

  • Months later, investigators catch copper thief

    Wilkies Grove Baptist Church helped out Margie Irene Reece by paying her last two power bills. On Wednesday, the Burke County Sheriff's Office charged Reece, 19, as an accessory after the fact in relation to thefts at the church.
