  • Bad economy good business for fairs, festivals

    With unemployment at 15 percent in the county and the country still in the grips of recession, folks appear to be turning to local entertainment options. Larry Taylor, treasurer of the Burke County Fair, said gate receipts were down this year about $1,500 but that was mainly due to a one-night rain washout. The fair was ahead of last year's receipts every night except the night of Aug. 5, when the skies opened up with rain, Taylor said.

  • Alcohol petition started in Valdese

    A group in Valdese has initiated procedures to ask for a vote on beer, wine, ABC store and liquor by the drink in the town. The process was started Friday, when several from the group picked up petitions at the elections office and made their intentions for a vote known, said election officials.

  • Bids come in on new Valdese Town Hall

    Construction companies facing tough economic times are vying for a chance to build a new town hall for Valdese. Construction bids were opened on Thursday and 18 construction companies from as far away as Charleston, S.C. and Pilot Mountain were among them.

  • Plastic bottles banned from landfills

    If you haven't been recycling your plastic bottles, you need to start or you could face legal ramifications. The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources put plastic bottles, along with motor oil filters and wooden pallets, on the list of items banned in landfills, according to information from the state.

  • Burke law round-up finds 11, property seized

    In a multi-agency effort Wednesday, officers hoped to serve 38 warrants for drug related charges. As of 5 p.m. officers had succeeded in serving 11 warrants across the county.

    The Valdese Police Department is seeking witnesses to an automobile accident that occurred at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

  • The Fab Beat brings the Beatles to downtown Valdese

    The Fab Beat will play at 7 p.m. Friday in Valdese as part of the Valdese Family Friday Night Series in the Wachovia/Town parking lot.

  • Pileup closes I-40

    More than a dozen vehicles were involved in a pileup Wednesday on Interstate 40 near mile marker 109 between Drexel and Valdese.

  • Two teens arrested for Valdese drive by shooting

    Two teenage boys were charged Wednesday with "going armed to the terror of people" after eyewitness accounts aided a Valdese Police Department's investigation into a shooting incident July 18.

    Continuing a long history of family tradition, Gennifer Hogan will direct the original play written by the late Fred Cranford in its 42nd season. "From This Day Forward," an original Old Colony Players outdoor drama, opens Friday and runs through Aug. 15 in Valdese.Hogan, who is of Waldensian heritage, can't imagine summer without being involved with "From This Day Forward."

  • Valdese considers helping with bills

    Officials in the town of Valdese are looking into whether they can help the neediest residents pay some of their bills. Valdese Town Council Member Keith Ogle asked during comments from the board if the town could give funds to help offset the cost of water and sewer bills to those in need.

    A requirement that military clothing be made in the U.S. has scored a coup for a local hosiery mill. Al Robinson, co-owner of Robinson Hosiery Mill in Valdese, got word Wednesday from state Rep. Hugh Blackwell that the company was awarded a military contract to make boot liners/dress socks for the military. The company put in a bid on the project in February, he said.

    The Valdese Family Friday Night's summer series will continue this week with the sounds of bluegrass provided by local band Three Mile Creek and Sweet Briar Jam at 7 p.m. in the Wachovia Parking lot.

    The Valdese Fire Department received a $1,700 fire prevention grant recently from FM Global, a leading property insurer of the world's largest businesses based in Johnston, R.I.
