U.S. Senate candidate attends Sheriff's barbecue

"I want to be sure we protect the working people," five-term N.C. Sen. Kay Hagan said on Saturday at Burke County Sheriff John McDevitt's annual barbecue held at the Collett Street Recreation Center in Morganton.

Oversight, regulation and limiting chief executive officers' compensation are among some of the things Hagan said she wants to change about banks if she gains the U.S. Senate seat.

Hagan, the Democratic nominee running against Sen. Elizabeth Dole, said taxpayers shouldn't be paying for the current financial crisis. Another concern is helping North Carolinians keep their homes, she said.

The senator placed emphasis on her presence in the state, something she said Dole hasn't done as a U.S. Senator. Hagan said residents of Morganton, Burke County and all of North Carolina need and deserve a voice in Congress.

Hagan said she came to the barbecue to "show her support" for McDevitt. The duo proceeded to mingle with the assembled crowd.

"I'm very excited Kay Hagan (came)," McDevitt said. Like Hagan, he listed Dole's lack of presence in the state as a detracting factor to her record.

"(Hagan) has done a good job in the state Senate," McDevitt said.

As Election Day approaches, other Democratic candidates made an appearance throughout the evening to appeal to voters.

McDevitt said the annual barbecue usually draws in at least 2,000 county residents. During election years, it isn't unusual to see the Democratic candidates at the dinner, he said.

Democratic County Commissioner candidates Bruce Hawkins, Gary McClure and Steven Smith greeted attendees at the door with a table full of political paraphernalia.

N.C. Rep. Walt Church, running for re-election in the 86th district, was overheard saying he was delivering food.

Daniel Johnson, in a race against incumbent U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry, made an appearance and greeted guests.

Despite the strong Democratic presence, McDevitt said his list of sponsors include several Republicans. Politicians should focus on their integrity, not negative campaigning, to gain support, he said.
