New Burke EMS director likes the challenge

"My biggest goal is to provide the best and highest quality in emergency medical services at the most efficient cost," Randy Price, the new director of Burke County Emergency Services said.
Price started as director at the end of June, filling the vacancy left by Randy McKinney at the end of January.
Previously the coordinator of emergency medical services in the education department at Catawba Valley Community College, Price said he also has 34 years of uniformed EMS service including time spent as the director of EMS in Lincoln County.
Expressing his eagerness at engaging in the job, Price said, "You get addicted to the unpredictable and dealing with the unpredicted every day."
"This is the type of position I've always wanted to be involved in," Price said. He described managing all divisions of Burke Emergency Services including emergency management, fire services, emergency medical services and 911 communications.
"It's a tremendous amount of challenge and that was the draw (of the job) for me," Price said.
Price began his career in emergency services as a college student at Western Carolina University student studying furniture design. As a member of the Student Emergency Care Team at the university he helped implement a service that provided emergency transportation to people on campus.
Ambulances could take up to 45 minutes to reach the campus, Price said. The team sought to provide ambulances on the campus that could decrease the response time.
The program is still in use at the university, Price said.
"I became enamored of (emergency services)," Price said. He changed his major and has been in emergency work ever since.
