Beckler coins and widow's mites are just two examples of coins that will be on display this weekend at the Morganton Coin Show.
Sponsored by the Morganton Coin Club and Morganton Parks and Recreation, the show will display ancient, modern and commemorative coins and even paper money from the Civil War era, club President Scott Arney said.
There's no admission fee to see what coin dealers from across the southeast have to share, Arney said.
Education exhibits from the North Carolina Numismatic Association will be on display, too. This is where you can catch a glimpse of rare Beckler coins.
Arney explained that the first gold rush in the United States happened in North Carolina and the Becklers in Rutherfordton were the first to mint gold coins.
And do widow's mites sound familiar, too?
Arney related the biblical story of a poor widow who gave all her mites to the church collection. Jesus pointed out to the congregation that the widow gave away all her money, whereas the others only gave a portion of their belongings.
If that story isn't captivating enough for children, then a program about coins might earn their undivided attention. Arney said one of the exhibits will be targeted toward children and all those under 10 will receive bags of coins.
Adults will be winners, too. Arney said there will be hourly drawings for gold and silver coins. All proceeds from the drawings will go to Parks and Recreation, he added.

The Morganton Coin Show in the Collett Street Recreation Center is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday. There is no admission fee.
