While there may be help in the community for those out of work or economically strapped, where to go for help might not be as clear.
That's why the United Way and The News Herald are teaming up to bring those agencies together for a day.
"Under One Roof" is set for 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday at Collett Street Recreation Center in Morganton.
Sally Learned, executive director for Burke County United Way, said with the high unemployment in the county, United Way officials were concerned that people didn't know where to go.
Learned said there will be representatives from more than 20 agencies at the event.
Some of the organizations participating include Blue Ridge Community Action, Burke County Department of Social Services, Burke County Health Department, Burke Literacy, Consumer Credit Counseling Services, Options, Salvation Army and Good Samaritan Clinic.
The agencies will have information on eligibility requirements and some will have applications for services, she said.
Drug discount cards will be available, as well as referral information, Learned said.
The News Herald decided to get involved because it has an obligation to help the community, said Publisher Lamar Smitherman.
"One way we can help is to partner with local agencies that are dedicated to Burke County," Smitherman said. "With a 16 percent unemployment rate in Burke County, there are a large number of people in our community who need help. 'Under One Roof' will provide those without a job access to more than 15 agencies that may be able to help."
In addition to coverage of the event, The News Herald provided a significant amount of advertising to promote the event, Smitherman said.
