Burke County's informal communications grapevine quivered Monday after one of the SACS CASI review team's meetings.
The rumor mill said East Burke Middle School principal Randy Sain tried to make an audio recording of the session.
Sain at 11:17 a.m. sent principals an e-mail — since then widely circulated — to "allay any fears you may have."
Sain said he brought the digital device "merely to have a record in case anything we said was misconstrued." He said he turned it off "when the moderator started telling us ... that everything said was to be anonymous and in strictest confidence." Sain said he also erased the first three minutes he'd recorded.
"I apologize if my action kept anyone from speaking their mind. That was certainly not my intent," he wrote.
Sain is the husband of school board member Karen Sain.
