More than just "Sex and Candy," Marcy Playground has released its fourth album, "Leaving Wonderland…In a Fit of Rage," and is set to perform Sunday at Catawba Valley Brewing Company, 212 S. Green St.

Marcy Playground made its mark on the music industry in 1997 with the hit single "Sex and Candy," which remained at No. 1 for 15 weeks on Billboard's U.S. Modern Rock tracks chart.

Although "Leaving Wonderland" includes songs about women and the various stages of relationships, the band has moved beyond its "Sex and Candy" days.

The trio of John Wozniak, Dylan Keefe and Shlomie Lavie are back on the road promoting their first release since "Marcy Playground 3" in 2004.

Lead singer and songwriter Wozniak said the album, which was written over a course of two to two-and-a-half months, is a reflection of his personal experiences.

"Leaving Wonderland" weaves together songs about "leaving something behind that is fantastical," Wozniak said.

The album comes off feeling like a coming of age story, with tracks delving into relationships, spiritual exploration and introspection.

Wozniak said the songs were influenced by a period of depression he experienced as well as the rekindling of a relationship with an ex-girlfriend, who is now his wife.

A friend of Wozniak's approached him one day and told him to, "get your guitar, play some music and get yourself out of this."

"The idea wasn't to make a record, it was just to play some music and do something creative and productive and pull me out of this funk that I found myself in," Wozniak said.

"Memphis" is a song about self-destruction and redemption, Wozniak said. While "Down the Drain" was written "at the heart of feeling really low."

Wozniak wrote "Good Times" as a "self-soothing" track, "to remind myself that no matter how bad it got, it's eventually going to pass."

Doors open at 7 p.m. and Evoka opens the show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Tickets are available at www.ticketweb.com, by phone at 1-866-468-7630 or at Catawba Valley Brewing Company on Thursday and Friday from 5 until 10 p.m. Listen to "Leaving Wonderland…In a Fit of Rage" online at www.marcyplayground.com.
