The Burke County Board of Education at its AUg. 10 meeting will hear reports on three topics that attracted community attention this month — the school budget, an accreditation review team's visit and schools' progress toward meeting the goals of the No Child Left Behind Act.
The meeting at 5:15 p.m. Monday in the West Concord Staff Development Center, 509 W. Concord St., will include up to 60 minutes of public comments.
Jonathan Clontz will discuss Aug. 3-4 visit by a review team from the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). The four-member team of educators had a series of 45-minute-long interviews with groups including administrators, teachers, parents, other community members and the school board members. The team is investigating local citizens' complaints and other information about whether the school district is violating SACS CASI's standards. The known complaints involve the school board, not the schools themselves.
SACS CASI accredits East Burke, Freedom and Patton high schools. Draughn High's students, whose classes started last fall, are covered under East Burke's accreditation until Draughn completes a full year of operation.
Clontz may provide more information about when school leaders can expect the team's report. A SACS CASI official, speaking before the team began work in Morganton, said it usually is ready in a month or less.
Superintendent Rick Sherrill will report on the school budget. The General Assembly last week finally approved the state's 2009-11 budget. It orders schools statewide to decide how to cut spending by $225 million.
The agenda lists three items for board action. They are the child nutrition budget, the board meeting calendar for 2008-09 and band instruments for East Burke High School.
People who want to speak to the board for up to three minutes may sign up by calling Sue Lowdermilk at Central Office, 439-3411, before 3 p.m. today or by signing up at the West Concord Street center before the meeting begins.
