With mouthwatering aromas wafting in the air, guests at the Taste of Charleston didn't wait long before scooping up plates of Chef Aaron Deal's creations.
Deal, the executive chef at Tristan in Charleston, S.C., along with his parents, Angela and David Deal, hosted the event at First Baptist Church as a fundraiser for Burke United Christian Ministries.
Items on the menu included Charleston white shrimp and grits, sweet potato biscuits with wildflower honey barbecue pork, Charleston blue crabcakes with pickled cucumber remoulade, sweet summer corn fritters with smoked mayonnaise, fried green tomatoes with three pepper jelly and bananas foster.
David Deal said a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to Burke United Christian Ministries.
Demand for tickets was so great, the Deals added 20 tickets, which promptly sold out, Deal said.
Burke United Christian Ministries Executive Director David Tate said the money will be used to prevent more families from becoming homeless.
Tate said the event embodied the mission of Burke United Christian Ministries by bringing the community together to support the less fortunate.
Burke United Christian Ministries Director of Mission Opportunities Suzy Fitzgerald said Aaron Deal's decision to hold the event in his hometown is evidence of the strong ties within the community.
Aaron Deal said the event was impossible without the help of volunteers, who assisted in preparing, serving and clearing tables.
Deal said the event went, "better than I expected...I loved every second."
David Deal said the organizers were pleased with the ticket sales and gave effusive thanks to Pritchard Designs, who donated the arrangements at the event.
