The Burke County Board of Education is soliciting public input as it narrows down the field of superintendent candidates.
A news release the board sent out Friday afternoon said it has received 25 applications for the superintendent position.
According to the North Carolina School Boards Association, the average number of superintendent applicants per school district, nationally is about 12, the release said.
The candidates include 16 with superintendent experience in North Carolina and/or other states, three with experience as assistant superintendent, two with other central office experience, three current North Carolina principals, and one with a nontraditional education background.
Of the 16 applicants with superintendent experience, they have a combined total of 133 years as leaders of other systems.
The board is sending letters soliciting public input from community leaders, as well as seeking input from staff.
Parents, students and members of the public also are invited to participate in an anonymous online survey to help in this process.
To participate, visit http://www.burke.k12.nc.us and submit a response by Sept. 1.
The board will review the results and share them with the final candidates.
