Less than two weeks after the Burke County Board of Education approved a 2009-10 calendar with once-a-month meetings, Board Chair Tracy Norman has called a second August session.
The Burke County Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the Olive Hill Room at the West Concord Resource Center, 509 W. Concord Street.
The board will hear an update on litigation. The school board's lawsuits against the Burke County Board of Commissioners are scheduled to go to court at 10 a.m. Monday in Burke County Superior Court.
The update on litigation, along with discussion of personnel issues, will occur in closed session.
In open session, Walter R. Johnson Middle School principal Darrin Foddrell will discuss school needs, Assistant Superintendent Tony Cox will update the board on plans for dealing with the H1N1 ("swine flu") virus, health/PE teacher and trainer Allison Duckworth from Freedom High School will discuss emergency response and Robert Bonner, who chairs the schools' safety committee, will discuss supplemental accident insurance.
The school board traditionally does not receive public comments at its special called meetings and public comments are not on Monday's agenda.
The school board's regular meetings for the 2009-10 school year are scheduled for Sept. 8 (a Tuesday), Oct. 5, Nov. 2, Dec. 7, Jan. 4, Feb. 1, March 1, April 12, May 3, June 7 and June 30 at 11:30 a.m.
All meetings are on Mondays except as noted and all start at 5:15 p.m. except for the end-of-year session that begins at midday so the schools' finance office has time to close the books on the year. The board currently plans to have all regular meetings in the West Concord Resource Center.
