National country music artist and CMA award winner James Otto is headlining the Historic Morganton Festival on Sept. 12, said Sharon Jablonski, City of Morganton Main Street director and executive director of the festival.
With "Just Got Started Lovin' You," Otto had a No. 1 hit and the most played single of 2008.
Otto was an ACM Award winner in the Song of the Year category as a co-writer for Jamey Johnson's "In Color."
Opening for Otto is Danielle Peck. She released her debut album this summer, which includes the songs "I Don't" and "Findin' a Good Man."
Peck takes to the City Stage at 7 p.m. followed by Otto.
Festival activity begins at 1 p.m. the day before, Jablonski said, with the Model A Hill Climb on North King Street at the Collett Street Recreation Center.
The streets of downtown open to festival goers at 3 p.m Sept. 11 as craft vendors line the courthouse square and South Sterling Street, offering a plethora of art, jewelry, pottery, soap, candles and more.
The famous row of food vendors will serve gyros, BBQ, chicken on a stick, French pastries, homemade ice cream and more.
Some food vendors, including Apple Hill Orchards, Thai Town, BBQ on a Stick and Scarboro Fair, have come up with value menus this year, Jablonski said.
KidZone also opens at 3 p.m. It features ticketed rides and games plus free crafts, puppets, magicians, storytelling and music.
For those a little more adventurous, there is the Zone which includes a climbing wall and other challenging fun.
Opening ceremonies for the 28th annual festival start at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11.
Jablonski said there will be a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives eight years ago in the terrorists attacks.
The Miller Lite Stage and Beer Garden will host rock and roll music that night while City Stage will be shagging with the Embers.
For teenagers, a DJ dance party starts at 9 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Pepsi Stage on North Sterling Street.
The Table Rock Runners' annual Sunrise Run on the Greenway takes place Sept. 12 with registration at 7 a.m., a fun run at 8 a.m. and the 5K and 10K at 8:30 a.m.
The festival opens at 9 a.m. and encompasses eight city blocks downtown with even more artists and crafters hailing from more than 15 states, Jablonski said.
Yard art, baskets, crafted toys, jellies, wines, clothing, carvings, baskets, plants, pottery and lots of jewelry will be featured.
