The Burke County Board of Education will begin interviewing candidates for the superintendent's position during a special called meeting Tuesday in Charlotte.
Most of the meeting will be in closed session — perhaps with no more than a minute or two to open the meeting and approve a motion to go into closed session. The only agenda topics are personnel and litigation.
The school district announced the meeting late on Sunday afternoon.
"It is not anticipated that there will be any action taken during the meeting," according to school board clerk Sue Lowdermilk.
The meeting will be in the prefunction area off the main lobby at Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel. The hotel at 2800 Coliseum Centre Drive is only a mile or so from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The site is convenient for out-of-state travelers who have meetings in North Carolina.
There may be additional meetings with candidates this week, possibly including more sessions in Charlotte. According to a schedule announced June 30 by special counsel Richard Schwartz, who is helping the school board with the superintendent-selection process, the school board was to have preliminary interviews Sept. 1-4, final interviews (probably in Burke County) Sept. 14-18; and contract discussions Sept. 18-22, all leading toward a goal of making the final selection on Sept. 24.
