North Carolina Association of County Veterans Service Officers award scholarship

Sarah Karetha Parks of Morganton has been awarded the North Carolina Association of County Veterans Service Officers Memorial Scholarship.
Parks competed against numerous applicants across the state. Her selection was made at the North Carolina Association of County Veterans Service Officers Training Conference in May.
Shirley McCurry, past president of the North Carolina Association of County Veterans Service Officers and Burke County Veterans Services director submitted Parks' application to the NCACVSO Scholarship Committee for consideration.
Parks attends Western Piedmont Community College and plans to continue her education at a major university and pursue a degree in elementary education.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Avery Parks of Morganton.
The North Carolina Association of County Veterans Service Officers Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually during the first week of May in memory of deceased County Veterans Service Officers.
To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must be the child of any honorably discharged veteran in the state of North Carolina. The application which includes financial information to demonstrate family income, letters of recommendations from teachers and community leaders, current high school or college transcripts and a one-page essay on "What a Veteran Means to Me" must be submitted to the local County Veterans Services Office.
The County Veterans Services Office will receive applications, screen and submit no more than two applications for consideration to the scholarship committee.
Any interested applicants must submit their applications to the County Veterans Services Office no later than April each year.
Interested applicants may contact Burke County Veterans Services 439-4373 for the application and interview during the months of February and March.
