Burke County native Tom Brittain has received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award from the governor's office.
The award is given in recognition of a proven record of service, of having given something or created something that has left a lasting mark on this state.
Brittain, a Burke County native, has been in public service for more than 40 years.
He has been instrumental in creating services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Through the local mental health system, he and his colleagues brought group homes, work programs and day services to people in the Foothills counties.
Brittain led in creating home- and community-based services through the Medicaid Waiver, allowing children and adults to receive support in making living in their own homes possible.
He was the principal influence in the development and growth of Turning Point Services, for which he now serves as president of the board of directors. TPS, with corporate offices in Morganton, is a private provider of services for individuals with developmental disabilities across the state.
Brittain most recently was involved in the renovation of Pilot Mountain School in Burke County. With restorations that honor the early years of the school, the facility now houses a coffee shop and restaurant, an auditorium and a small western wear business. Plans exist for continued development of the school as a resource for the local community, a location for ongoing events and opportunities for families affected by disabilities and the community at large.
Brittain is married to Judy Brittain and has two sons in the Morganton area, Todd Brittain and Chris Brittain.
He received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine on June 24 at the Turning Point Services summer staff meeting, attended by more than 130 full-time employees.
Past recipients include Maya Angelou, Billy Graham, Michael Jordan, Bob Timberlake and Dean Smith.
