Eight people turned out on the first day to file as a candidate for the November election.
Those filing on Monday were:
Burke County Board of Education
• Sam Wilkinson, incumbent, eastern district.
• Catherine Thomas, western district.
• Elizabeth Peterson and Susan Stroup, western district. (Unexpired term David Barnard left vacant, currently filled by John Aulgur, up for reelection in 2010.)
Four seats are up for grabs this year on the Burke County Board of Education, one in the eastern district, one in the central district and two in the western district.
The filing fee for the board of education is $20.
Hildebran Town Council
• Incumbents Michael Orders and Michael Stroupe.
Valdese Town Council
• Susan Stevenson, incumbent, Ward 2.
• Gary Delp, incumbent, Ward 1.
Seats on town councils in the county this year include:
• Connelly Springs: Mayor and three Aldermen. The filing fee is $5.
• Drexel: Mayor and two Aldermen. The filing fee for aldermen is $5. The fee for mayor is $10.
• Glen Alpine: Mayor and three Aldermen. The filing fee is $5.
• Hildebran: Mayor and three council members. The filing fee is $5.
• Rutherford College: Mayor and three council members. The filing fee is $15.
• Valdese: Mayor and three council members. The filing fee for mayor is $15 and the fee for council members is $10.
Candidates can file for election at the Burke County Board of Elections, 201 W. Meeting St., Morganton. For more information, call the Burke County Board of Elections at 433-1703.
The city of Morganton is holding its election on Oct. 6. Two seats are up for election, one in council district 3 and one in council district 4.
Those who filed for city elections on Monday were incumbents:
• John Cantrell, district 3.
• Alfred Hamer Jr., district 4.
The filing fee to run for a seat on the city council is $20. Candidates can file at City Hall, 305 E. Union St., Suite A100, Morganton.
The filing period for all elections in the county, including Morganton, runs through noon on July 17.
