Two girls were back home Thursday in Wilmington after a visit with their father ended in a vehicle accident.
North Carolina State Highway Trooper Daniel Wakefield said Sterling Loven, 43, of Morganton was driving on Old N.C. 105 on Wednesday evening with his two daughters, ages 13- and 7-years, when the car went over a steep hill.
Loven told investigators that when he crested a hill, the left front tire of his truck popped and he lost control.
The vehicle ran off to the left and hit a tree before rolling several times, Wakefield said. Both Loven and his eldest daughter were ejected from the vehicle after approximately 100 feet.
The truck proceeded down the hill approximately another 150 feet before hitting a tree and stopping, Wakefield said.
After being ejected, the 13-year-old climbed up the hill and managed to flag a passerby for help, Wakefield said.
It took emergency responders about two hours to locate Loven, who was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Wakefield said. He did not have life threatening injuries.
The two girls were transported to Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville with minor injuries, Wakefield said.
The initial cause of the accident is still under investigation, as the truck could not be extricated from its resting place Wednesday night, Wakefield said.
