Recommendation on Lake James could come Wednesday

The legislative panel is expected to meet Wednesday night to decide the fate of a proposed village in the Lake James community.
The Joint Legislative Commission on Municipal Incorporations will meet at 6 p.m. in Room 1027-B of the Legislative Building in Raleigh, said Gayle L. Moses, staff attorney for the commission.
Moses said she expects the commission to decide whether the boundaries of the proposed village are contiguous.
People on both sides of the issue argued the point of contiguity during a public hearing the commission held July 16.
Parts of the lake divide the proposed village. The most conspicuous example is at the village's eastern end where a bay separates the SouthPointe and East Shore neighborhoods. Because Huntertown falls between them on land, the two neighborhoods aren't contiguous on the ground.
Moses said she also expects the commission to make a final recommendation to the N.C. General Assembly on the proposed village during the meeting tonight.
The commission advises the General Assembly on the creation of new towns and cities.
"I don't know how the Commission will decide these, or any other issues, that may come up," Moses said.
Sen. Jim Jacumin already has Senate Bill 538 prepared for the legislature's vote, though it still could be rewritten.
At the public hearing on July 16, several people, including a representative for Crescent Resources, said they want their property taken out of the village's description. Sen. Fletcher Hartsell, the commission's co-chair, said there's nothing the commission can do about that; changes would be up to the legislature.
Jacumin, who also was at the public hearing, said it would be up to the petitioners and his constituents to tell him what changes they want.
A final decision on the proposed incorporation would be up to the General Assembly.
